Why 1km a day?

Banjo Paterson didn’t just write about Australia - he moved through it.

In the late 19th century, walking wasn’t exercise. It was life. As a journalist, traveller and bushman, Paterson covered vast distances on foot when horses or transport weren’t practical. That slow, grounded movement through the land shaped not just where he went, but how he saw the world - and how he wrote about it.

In The Song of the Australian Road, Paterson uses the word “tramp” - a 19th-century term that explicitly means walking long distances. It speaks to endurance. Purpose. Putting one foot in front of the other, day after day. That idea sits at the heart of our challenge.

This May, we’re inviting our A.B. Paterson College community to walk 1km a day. Because small, consistent steps can change lives.

Every kilometre supports children projects through our College Foundation. It’s simple. It’s achievable. And it’s deeply connected to who we are.

Just as Banjo Paterson walked the roads that shaped his legacy, we move together - for children, for community, and for a cause greater than ourselves.

The Race for Kids

Race For Kids challenges YOU to walk 1 km every day in May. Proceeds (after expenses) will support the A.B. Paterson College Foundation and the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation.

Funds raised for GCHF will go directly to approved paediatric initiatives at Gold Coast University Hospital, supporting improved patient experience and health outcomes for children.

What we do

A.B. Paterson College Foundation has launched Race for Kids, a fun and uplifting fundraiser that turns a simple daily walk into meaningful support for children in hospital and impact projects at A.B. Paterson College.

how it works

Register now and pledge to walk 1km every day this May. Get active and track your kilometres, and encourage family and friends to throw their support behind you!

The Ninja Warrior Playground has become one of the most popular play spaces in the Junior School - designed to inspire movement, confidence and challenge through active play.

Located prominently near the College’s Village Green, this fully covered, Ninja Warrior - style obstacle course has been purpose-built for students in Years 3 - 6.

This project represents the very best of our College community. The Ninja Warrior Playground was jointly funded through the generous efforts of the A.B. Paterson College Foundation and the Friends of A.B. Paterson (FAB) Committee, whose shared commitment to enhancing student experience has helped bring this vision to life.
